Fla. mom is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter

Casey Anthony reacts in court during her trial at the Orange County Courthouse on Tuesday in Orlando, Fla. Anthony is charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008.

The Florida mother accused of killing her 2-year old daughter entered a hard body contest around the time the toddler disappeared, according to testimony Wednesday, and the woman asked a neighbor to borrow a shovel two days after the little girl was last seen alive.
Casey Anthony, 25, is charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 death of her daughter Caylee. Prosecutors said Caylee died from three pieces of duct tape being placed over her mouth and nose while Anthony's attorney has claimed the toddler accidentally drowned in her grandparents' pool.
Caylee was last seen on June 16, 2008. One of the grandparents' neighbors, Brian Burner, testified that Anthony asked him June 18 if she could borrow a shovel to "dig up a bamboo root." She returned the shovel about an hour later, he said.
Burner also said he remembered seeing Anthony's white car backed into the garage on the afternoon of June 16.
About a month before that, Anthony met Tony Lazaro during a party. They soon became romantically involved and she moved into an apartment he was sharing with four other people.
Her ex-roommates testified that they met Anthony's daughter several times and then at some point in early June, they never saw her again.
When they asked about Caylee, her mother told them she was with her nanny at a theme park or going to the beach.
The four witnesses said Anthony's demeanor never suggested anything was wrong. She would cook, clean and help out around the apartment, they said.
"She was a regular 22-year-old girl," said Cameron Campana, a club promoter who was a college student at the time. "Peppy. She seemed normal."
Another roommate, Nathan Lezniewicz, said Anthony liked going out and having a good time.
"She was not an introvert by any means," he said.
Maria Kissh, a girlfriend of one of the roommates, said she saw Anthony in a "hard body contest" during a nightclub promotion, and that Anthony once told her Caylee's father was dead.
Kissh described riding in Anthony's car along with her roommates, but under questioning by Anthony's attorney, she said neither she nor any of the other passengers smelled any odor. Prosecutors have said they believe Caylee's decaying body had been stored there, and the girl's grandparents noticed a foul odor when they picked up the car from a towing lot.
In their opening statement, prosecutors said Caylee was last seen by her grandfather on June 16. Anthony waited a month before telling her mother Caylee had disappeared, and that was only after her parents recovered the car, prosecutors said.
The trial began Tuesday with explosive allegations and two very different theories about how the little girl died.
For the first time, prosecutors said Caylee died from the duct tape. Anthony's attorney claimed the toddler drowned and the girl's grandfather helped cover up the accident. Defense attorney Jose Baez also leveled accusations that Anthony was sexually abused by her father. Anthony's father disputed both allegations when he took the stand.
The contrasting explanations about how Caylee died were offered to the jury in part because an autopsy was never able to conclude a cause of death. Prosecutors believe they have enough circumstantial evidence to prove Casey killed her daughter during the summer of 2008.

Elderly woman, dentist fight over dentures

At one point, 85-year-old tried to climb out window to escape, affidavit says

A central Florida dentist was arrested after he allegedly fought with an 85-year-old patient who was upset her dentures didn’t fit properly, authorities said Wednesday.

Michael Hammonds, 57, faces multiple charges, including false imprisonment, after the Tuesday incident.
The dispute began after Hammonds attempted to adjust Virginia Graham’s lower partial dentures, authorities said. She allegedly screamed in pain because it felt like the fake teeth had cut her gum, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office charging affidavit said.
The report said a witness told authorities Graham threw the dentures at Hammonds and told him she didn’t want them. She then tried to grab them from him, but he wouldn’t let go, the report said. During a tug-of-war over the dentures, the woman’s finger got caught on a sharp piece of the denture and bled, the report said.
Graham bit the dentist on the hand and he let go of them, authorities said.
The elderly woman went to leave the office, but Hammonds allegedly blocked her way and continued screaming at her, authorities said. She said she became afraid he might hurt her, the report said.
“Graham made one final attempt to leave by trying to climb over the receptionist desk and out the receptionist’s window,” but Hammonds’ assistant helped her down, according to the report.
The deputy observed multiple bruises on Graham’s upper arms and forearms. Hammonds was released on $4,000 bond Tuesday night. A telephone message left at the dental office wasn’t immediately returned, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Dwarf baby rabbit that has taken up residence in the backyard of Brass Balls Pawn.  Picture is taken from the second story window.  Dwarf rabbits have smaller ears than other rabbits and their ears stand straight up.  They get 1/3 the size of other rabbits.  They make wonderful pets if you know how to care for them.  They can be litter box trained.  Their coats are extremely soft.  They love to be held and like to lick you with their soft tongue.  This one is wild and if caught in the wild, they usually do not survive.  So if you see one in your yard, let it be.  This one is seen next to the tongue of Brass Balls Pawn's racecar hauler.

Greensboro Man Pleads Guilty In $9 Million Scheme

Man Used Money To Live Lavish Lifestyle

POSTED: 3:52 pm EDT May 13, 2011
Federal prosecutors said a Greensboro man has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering in a $9 million investment scheme.
U.S. Attorney George Holding said 65-year-old James Edward Whitley pleaded guilty in New Bern on Friday.
From 2006 to 2009, prosecutors say Whitley told investors their money would be invested in different businesses and that they would get their returns when his contracts expired, handing out promissory notes detailing due dates and interest rates.
But prosecutors said Whitley instead used the cash to pay other investors, bought himself cars and trips and paid off a $1,000,000 loan on his Bald Head Island home. In all, prosecutors said Whitley took more than $9 million from investors.
Whitley faces up to 30 years in prison when he's sentenced in August.
